Sophia Casas, born in 1986 in New York City, is an artist and educator currently
based in Houston, Texas. She received her Bachelor's in Painting from the Rhode
Island School of Design in 2008 and her Master’s in Art Education from New York
University in 2015. Her paintings are dream-like narratives that explore a range of emotional
connections and stories between human figures and their environments. By
creating levels of ambiguity and mystery in these narratives, she encourages the
viewer to generate their own personal connection or story within each painting.
Sophia’s paintings consist mostly of works on paper, in various sizes made with a mix
of water-based media. Primarily an educator, Sophia has also traveled in her time off to
produce work in various artist residencies; these places have heavily shaped her work.
In all of these locations she was drawn to and influenced by the cultures that
surrounded her: crafts, music, language, fashion, and the environment all reemerge in
the work through a process of immersion.
